Ice Cream Sandwich and Pimple Cream: The Common Ingredient

You ready for this one?  I’m not even sure if I’m ready to write about it, but it is DEFINITELY a food story that needs to be told.  Over the summer I took my boys to a popular indoor playground in Los Angeles.  You know the ones where your kids climb, swing, slide and basically wreak havoc for several hours in a padded room while you try desperately to tune out the constant drone of screaming?  Yup, that’s the one.

After an hour or so, I promised the boys they could have a treat from the snack stand.  Thinking they would have a couple of decent options, I was dismayed to find that our choices were limited to electric blue slushies, candy bars or ice cream sandwiches.  I bought the ice cream sandwiches thinking they’d be the better option.  Boy was I wrong.  Take a look at the ingredients in the following comparison.  Pay special attention an ingredient in the enriched flour: Benzoyl Peroxide.  No, this isn’t an ingredient list for Stridex, it’s an ice cream sandwich for kids.

I know we may not all make fresh ice cream sandwiches, I mean come on, I bought my child an ice cream sandwich that could have been used to clear up pimples.  But one thing I’m learning in this process is the importance of Reading Labels! If we all take anything away from this, I hope it is the knowledge that all products are not created equal.  Just check the label.  Until next week…

You know benzoyl peroxide is also used in dairy products right…the milk in the ice cream alone contains it. Wish it didn’t- used to love ice cream before I discovered my benzoyl peroxide allergy!

Oh my gosh. That is disgusting! My family eats that kind of stuff all the time and it is so hard when we go visit because they are always trying to push that stuff on us. They think that our healthy eating habits are extreme and self-centered. So I usually end up giving in and eating what it is they are pushing. But after seeing this stuff I’m resolving to resist. Great blog, I’m a new follower!

Wow. That’s incredible. I had no idea this “ingredient” could make its way into a food product. Thanks for sharing!
