“Kid’s Only” Recipe Challenge – Enter Today!

This past week, I was honored to guest host the Food Revolution Tuesday Twitter Party where we discussed a topic near and dear to many of our hearts - Feeding Picky Eaters.  We got a lot of new and creative ideas from fellow parents struggling with the same issues from around the globe.  You can find the followup article and some of the wonderful suggestions here on jamieoliver.com.

This week I will be offering a fun and exciting way to help picky eaters try real, fresh food – A “Kid’s Only” Recipe Challenge!  Because this Out of the Box Food journey has become such a big part of my family’s life, I have included my children in every step of the process, including a weekly recipe Competition for Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution.  Each week the Food Revolution team would tweet a theme, such as “salad”, and we would submit our best recipe and recipe title for that category.  Let me tell you, my kids LOVED it.  They came up with creative ingredients (some of which I was convinced were ingredients they couldn’t stand), and added them to their recipes.  Here’s the big bonus – we made their recipes and served them at our dinner table each week. Yup, if they created a salad that has cucumbers – they had to eat cucumbers.  And you know what?  They did.

This week we will be offering our own Out of the Box Food “Kids Only” Recipe Challenge – and it’s just for the kids (sorry grownups).

Kids – Here is your  mission:  Create your own original recipe, give it a fun, creative name and submit it below!  That’s it!  And grownups – psst…cover your kid’s ears – I’m fairly confident your kids will learn to like a few new real, fresh foods when you make & serve their recipe creations.  Consider it a little “prize” for you.

So, without further ado, I present our Kid’s Only Recipe Challenge theme.  Pencils & crayons ready?  Drum roll please…..

The recipe theme – On-a-Stick!

Food on sticks is fun, and kebabs are a fun way for kids to create their own canvas of healthy meal choices.  Kebabs can be made with meats, seafood, sausages, breads, vegetables, fruit…pretty much anything that can be threaded onto a stick – the possibilities are limitless.  Kebabs can be served raw, grilled or baked – for breakfast, lunch, dinner…or even dessert.  This is an opportunity for your children to get creative in the kitchen!  Need some inspiration?  Pop over to your local farmers market this weekend to inspire your children’s creativity with all the fresh, local produce!  They can see the summer’s bounty for themselves and can even ask local farmers tips on great produce for their Kebabs.

The winner of the Kids Only Recipe Challenge will receive a Handstand Kids Cookbook Kit* and will be featured as the Handstand Kid of the Month.  Simply submit your child’s recipe in the comment field at the bottom of this page with your child’s recipe title and recipe ingredients.  Your child may include measurements and directions if they wish, but a title and ingredient list will be plenty (examples from my sons: “The Golden Magic” – Tempura shrimp, sweet potato and carrot. or “BBQ Magic”-shrimp marinated in olive oil, scallion, S&P with eggplant & mushroom).  Kids may enter as many recipes as they like, but each recipe must be entered as a separate comment below. More recipes = more chances to win.  So get cooking and be creative!

Contest ends Saturday August 6, 2011 at 11:59 pm PST and winner will be selected by Random.org. Winner will be emailed and will have 48 hours to respond or a new winner will be drawn. (This giveaway is offered to all children, worldwide)  By entering a comment below, you agree to submit the comment as a submission in our “Kid’s Only” Recipe Challenge.

So kids, time to get creative and get cooking! Until next week…

*Handstand Kids Cookbook Kits are available online at www.handstandkids.com or at a Bed Bath & Beyond store near you.

The First “KIDS ONLY” RECIPE CHALLENGE is now closed.  The winning On-a-Stick Recipe is available on the Winner Announcement Page. Thank you for all the participation!
