Is Your Popcorn Coated in Lighter Fluid?

Is Your Popcorn Coated in Lighter Fluid?

As we head into fall, I find that my family starts to crave the cozy goodness of fresh popcorn.  It’s a perfect after school snack on a gray afternoon and it makes a delicious accompaniment to a Sunday movie.

I know on the surface it may seem easier to grab a bag of microwave popcorn and throw it in for three to five minutes.  But is it three minutes to fresh popped corn or three minutes to a chemical coated health risk?  You be the judge…

Two weeks ago we talked about TBHQ, a preservative added to some processed food to preserve freshness.  The kicker was that we discovered TBHQ is a form of Butane (that’s right, lighter fluid).  Now, let’s discuss.  In my humble opinion, lighter fluid in our food is disgusting.  Just my opinion.  I’ll leave it to the experts to determine how harmful it is to our bodies, but let’s just say I’m not willing to take a chance on my children.

It is amazing to me how many processed food items I have found containing TBHQ:  McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets, Eggo frozen waffles, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and now several varieties of Orville Redenbacher’s microwave popcorn.  If I may be so bold, “yuk”…

I’ve been scratching my head trying to figure out how microwave popcorn got to be so popular.  Not only is fresh popcorn easy to make, but it’s nearly as quick and definitely more budget friendly than the microwave version.  Microwave popcorn must have a really good publicist.  Until next week…

Thanks for the ideas on what to use on my popcorn!
I have always used a stove “popper” (it’s a deep pot with a handle, a lid that opens like a barn door with it’s hinges in the middle and you stir it by the jack-in-the box type handle attached to the handle you hold onto.. It’s all made out of metal and wood.. very lovely!).
Pops way more popcorn then the microwave stuff and always tasted better! We use 1cup popcorn and two tbs of coconut oil! Yum!

Thanks, Leanne! Your popper sounds great! I didn’t post this in my original article, but if you like a little spice, I’ve also been shaking a little chile (buffalo) sauce on popped popcorn and it’s delicious. Too spicy for the kids, but us adults gotta have a little fun too!

You can make simple, homemade, microwave popcorn too. Put 1/4 c popcorn kernels into a lunch size paper bag. Add 1tbsp olive oil (if you want seasonings to stick, otherwise omit). Add salt or seasonings (more than you think, not all will stick to the popcorn). Shake to coat. Fold over top about 1″, tape or staple (yes, staples will work in micro, been doing it for years). Ours takes 2 minutes, but micro until popping slows. Ta da!

Whatever happened to just plain old air popcorn machines. I know I still have one and use all the time the kids love it and love watching it spit out of the machine.
Thanks for your post today, have passed it on to all my mom friends.
